PIETRELCINA: The Hometown of Padre Pio

Preserving the Sacred Places
of His Early Life

A very important part of the Padre Pio Foundation of America’s mission is to maintain and care for the places nearest and dearest to Padre Pio’s heart. The PPFOA has lovingly supported numerous restoration and renewal projects in his hometown of Pietrelcina, Italy. These efforts ensure that pilgrims from around the world can continue to feel the same peace, simplicity and sanctity of the village that gave to us one of the Church’s most beloved saints.
PIETRELCINA: The Hometown of Padre Pio

Preserving the Sacred Places of His Early Life

A very important part of the Padre Pio Foundation of America’s mission is to maintain and care for the places nearest and dearest to Padre Pio’s heart. The PPFOA has lovingly supported numerous restoration and renewal projects in his hometown of Pietrelcina, Italy. These efforts ensure that pilgrims from around the world can continue to feel the same peace, simplicity and sanctity of the village that gave to us one of the Church’s most beloved saints.

Ongoing Projects Inspired by Padre Pio

Thanks to the special relationship the PPFOA has with the friars, the mayor and townspeople of Pietrelcina, we work together to keep Pietrelcina a special place of remembrance. The goal is to keep this village as it was for his devotees to come and understand the simple life the young Padre Pio lived with his family and friends. From these places we can find Jesus the way Padre Pio did as a very young child.

Lighting the Way at the Church of Padre Pio’s First Mass

This humble church, where Padre Pio celebrated his first Mass, holds deep spiritual meaning. For decades, the rooster weather vane atop the church—a symbol familiar to generations of Pietrelcina’s faithful—remained unlit. Thanks to the generosity of PPFOA benefactors, we restored full lighting throughout the church, bringing visibility, beauty, and reverence back to this sacred space.

We also contributed to artistic and structural improvements, including climate control and beautifully crafted bronze-and-glass doors that depict scenes from Padre Pio’s life.

Where Padre Pio Was Baptized

Santa Anna is the church where Padre Pio was baptized, and where his spiritual journey began. Following damage from the 1980 Irpinia earthquake, PPFOA helped fund urgent restoration.
Thanks to our donors, we:

  • Funded a new roof and electrical rewiring
  • Restored the original wooden pulpit
  • Repaired the church bell tower, allowing the bells to ring once again after years of silence

This beautiful church now stands strong for the next generation of pilgrims and locals alike.

Illuminating Historic Pietrelcina

To preserve the beauty and sacredness of Padre Pio’s hometown, PPFOA initiated a complete lighting upgrade across the historic sites in Pietrelcina. This included both churches and key devotional sites connected to Padre Pio’s early years.

Visitors are now able to walk safely and prayerfully through these places—morning, noon, or night—experiencing the village in its full spiritual and architectural beauty.

A Place of Peace for Modern Pilgrims

To welcome the growing number of pilgrims coming to Pietrelcina each year, PPFOA helped fund the creation of a new retreat house adjacent to the sacred churches Padre Pio knew and loved.

This simple but modern space offers rooms for prayer, reflection, and rest—just steps from the places where Padre Pio prayed, discerned his calling, and celebrated his first Mass.

Pietrelcina’s New Center for Prayer, Learning, and Community

In addition to supporting places of worship and pilgrimage, PPFOA is also helping to strengthen the spiritual life of the community itself.

The new prayer and community center in Pietrelcina offers a space for religious meetings, youth catechism (CCD) classes, retreats, and conferences—serving as the hub for all local religious activities.

This center ensures that the faith Padre Pio lived and passed on continues to grow in the next generation, right in the heart of his hometown.

Your generosity makes all of this possible.

Because of you, the sacred spaces of Pietrelcina continue to radiate the light and peace that shaped a saint.
