The Padre Pio Foundation of America was founded by Marge Spada in 1977.
Marge’s husband, Joe, was diagnosed with cancer in 1975. Through a friend, Marge and Joe learned about Padre Pio and began asking for his intercession. One day, Marge entered Joe’s hospital room and noticed a handkerchief on his bed stand. She asked, “Where did that come from?” Joe told her that Padre Pio had been with him and left it. He also explained that they had walked and talked together.
Joe told her that Padre Pio had been with him and left it. He also explained that they had walked and talked together. Joe experienced other visits from Padre Pio after that moment. Although he was not healed of cancer, his last days were peaceful, and he often spoke of Padre Pio’s visits. After Joe’s passing, Marge frequently noticed the sweet scent of flowers, a fragrance often associated with Padre Pio’s presence, known as the scent of sanctity.
Marge’s love for Padre Pio and her deep desire to share his presence with others led her to found the Padre Pio Foundation of America. Today, the handkerchief remains on display for veneration at the PPFOA.
